TutorTIPs Symposium: Beyond Fixin’ Their Papers: Using Comics, Visuals, and Audience to Engage Your College Writing Student

Beyond Fixin’ Their Papers: Using Comics, Visuals, and Audience to Engage Your College Writing Student
Phillip Peevy, Lab Instructor, Padrón Campus

New tutors often have difficulty knowing what to do in tutoring sessions involving freshman writing students beyond "fixin' their papers." What they should do with their students is to teach pupils to think through their writing by using visuals because getting students to THINK like a writer is much more effective. This workshop will explain (1) how tutors can help students effectively think through college writing and communication (2) how tutors can use a variety of graphic tools (including comics, graphic novels, and other materials) to help students think as they write.

Objectives

  • Explore visual ideas using a variety of graphic materials (i.e., comics, graphic novels, and other visual tools)
  • Communicate concepts involving visual learning, writing, and audience to students using visual tools
  • Demonstrate the use of one method tutors could use to engage writing students

Recording will be posted soon!
