Session Overview

Stand on the Shoulders of Giants to Step Over the Barriers of Inequity: Using Google Scholar to Leverage the Power of Open Access and OER
Michael Moore, Learning Resources Professional, Kendall Campus

This breakout session will educate, empower, and inspire MDC tutors with meaningful and actionable strategies to help students leverage the power of Google Scholar and Advanced Google Search. Google Scholar, for its part, was built on the idea that everyone, everywhere, regardless or status, should have the opportunity to “stand on the shoulders of giants.” Against that background, this breakout session will focus on intentional, practice-based strategies to help tutors and students locate free, high-quality research and learning materials to support any academic pathway.

Objectives

By attending this breakout session, MDC tutors will have an even greater opportunity to help deliver lasting, transformative change, including by driving the use and adoption of open educational resources, which is now more than ever an essential strategy used to promote equity by reducing cost barriers to information, textbooks, and learning and study materials. Session outcomes include learning basic and advanced search strategies using Google Scholar (and Advanced Google Search) to locate free and library-licensed materials for highly specific and customized use cases to improve student outcomes.
