TutorTIPs Symposium: Battling Bias and Embracing Equity

Battling Bias and Embracing Equity

Session Overview

Battling Bias and Embracing Equity
Arlizia Smith, Associate Instructor, Learning Resources, North Campus

Assumptions about others are made daily and can influence our teaching and learning environments. To cultivate an inclusive community, it is necessary to seek a deeper awareness of unconscious biases and realize that even unintended thoughts, attitudes and responses can have negative consequences. This session explores ways to reduce implicit bias and strategies to promote equity in the academic landscape. In the words of Maya Angelou, "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better."

Objectives

  • Identify unconscious bias
  • Assess the unconscious biases in teaching and learning interactions
  • Define equity
  • Explore ways to promote equity in higher education
