Promoting the Values of Empathy and Equity while Providing Writing Support to English as a Second Language (ESL) Students

In this presentation, we will consider some of the unique challenges and opportunities presented to writing tutors while providing academic support to students who speak English as a second language (ESL). Specifically, we will consider the best practices that writing tutors can employ to ensure that they are treating all students, regardless of English proficiency, with the same level of equity and empathy while providing writing assistance. While discussing these best practices we will consider the following 1) Barriers or concerns of ESL students to seeking writing assistance 2) Steps tutors can take to break down barriers/allay those concerns 3) Best practices while providing writing assistance to ESL students.

Objectives

  • Describe the challenges and opportunities while tutoring ESL students.
  • Cover best practices regarding writing tutoring for ESL students.
  • Identify ways to improve equity while tutoring ESL students in writing.
  • Address the concerns that ESL students may have in seeking help with their writing and how to best allay those concerns.
